Beginning in COL 3:5 and going through chapter 4:6 Paul describes what authentic Christian spirituality looks like…
In a word… he describes it as a process of a God-empowered renovation so that …we come to resemble Jesus …
This process involves deep ethical
change…NOT just in our outward
behaviors…
BUT… in our characters as well…
It involves relating to other Christians…NOT just by being superficially nice… BUT… …learning to deeply… and… sacrificially… love one another… the way Jesus loves US…
It involves being a Christ-like servant at home… and… at work And… it involves wisely and graciously sharing Christ’s love… in word… and… deed… with those who don’t believe in him…
WHAT’s the KEY to this kind of spiritual transformation?
How do I unleash God’s power… TO change me… into becoming more and more like Jesus?
FIRST LET’S LOOK AT what this key is NOT… it is NOT focusing on ritual-observance…
It’s NOT trying to
precipitate a dramatic spiritual experience like a vision…
It’s NOT simply exerting YOUR moral will-power.
Paul said… that… these may create a spiritual appearance… that… impresses others… and… fools yourself…BUT…
They don’t result in real spiritual renovation… and…TRANSFORMATION…
Then what IS the key?
The key is what Paul describes in Col.3:1-4... Where He says…
It’s to “set your heart… and… mind… on the things above.”
What does this mean? Why is this so important?
How do we do this?
FIRST…what does it mean? “The things above” refer to the new identity
that we receive from God as
Christians…
The moment you entrust yourself to
Jesus… you lose your old identity…and…
become identified with him… in ALL… the
very most important Aspects….
So… to “set your
heart and mind on the things above” refers to
making your identity in Christ
your mental focus… and your
greatest treasure.
The term “identity in Christ” is a synonym for what Paul earlier calls “the gospel.” This passage refers to three different aspects of this new identity…
“You have been raised up with Jesus... to the right hand of God.”
You used to be an orphan… without a Father to watch over your life… But… NOW… you are God’s child… with personal access to God… and… his power… and… authority over sin… and… Satan.
“Your life is hidden with Christ in God.” You used to be alienated from God…. But… NOW… you are spiritually alive—your alienation from God… has forever ended… and… your reconciliation… with God… is utterly secure.
“When Christ... is revealed… you will be revealed… with him… in glory.”
You used to be destined
for God’s judgment…for your sins… BUT… NOW…
you are assured of a glorious eternal destiny…to
enjoy Jesus’ glorious
presence… in his glorified universe… with glorified
bodies…without having to be judged… EVER…
WHY? Because… Jesus took the judgment reserved for you… in your place ….so you never will be judged again… EVER!
NO matter how new you are as a Christian…
NO matter how weak your faith in Christ… IS…
NO matter how inconsistent your behavior is…
ALL of these things I have mentioned…and… many more… are TRUE OF YOU…because...JESUS GAVE THEM TO YOU!
THIS…is how God sees you…
THIS is how God relates to you…
Just as He relates to… and sees… His only begotten Son… JESUS THE CHRIST… therefore… THIS… then…is WHO YOU REALLY ARE!
When you think about who you really are…
You will think along these lines more often…and…when you do… you’ll find …that… you are more grateful…
more personally thankful… for what Christ did for you…in His finished work on the cross… making you…who… you now… and… forever will be…IN CHRIST!
Why is it so important to do this?
THIS… is real work…my friends…IT’S TRANSFORMATION!
As anyone… who has tried to continue to stay in the boundaries… of this newly transformed frame of mind… lining up continually… in the SPIRIT with GOD’S WILL and PURPOSE knows…
WHY IT’S HARD WORK!
Why ? Because many factors conspire against our focus… on our newly transformed identity… in Christ.
For example… OLD “IDENTITY GROOVES”
What are they? negative and/or positive thoughts… and… habits FROM OUR FAMILY LIFE…
LIFE EXPERIENCES... THAT WERE HABITUALLY REHEARSED IN OUR PAST “OLD MAN’S” LIFE…
Before we were born again.
That’s why… the verbs translated “set your heart and mind” imply a conscious and ongoing effort… on our parts…an extremely long-term project…. But… this work is well worth it… because it unleashes God’s power to change YOU in a deep… lasting and fulfilling way!
It does this in two main ways:
Because only this work…gets to the root of your sinful habits and addictions.
Religions…and… by that I include the Christian “Religion”… try to combat sinful habits… mainly by moral will-power… by teaching sin…WE will be contained and controlled by doing the ten commandments.
These are merely external restraints…and… fear of negative consequences…
These ten commandments can never be fulfilled by human beings. Why? Because they… each one… depend on the other.
By that… I mean… when you are successful in fulfilling one…or two… but fail at number three…all three are wiped out.
Jesus was the only one successful in fulfilling the ten commandments…and in so doing… put us under His GRACE…which is living under His new blood covenant of Love…Where… we no longer have to do anything but love him …and… in so doing… are absolved of any and all sin…past… present… and… future.
At the root of every sinful habit …or
addiction… is a legitimate desire…
for God’s love… that
YOU are trying to MEET…in an illegitimate
way…
“looking for love in all the wrong places ” so-to-speak.
So… the ultimate way to overcome every sinful habit… or… addiction… is to learn how to trust in… and… enjoy God’s love.
To see yourself as God sees you…To fulfill that need…ONLY JESUS CHRIST can… and Does fill …
You need to learn how to rest in the security of his approval of you… and… how to revel… in his delight in you.
The more you do this… the less you will feel the need to buy the apparel and trappings to drape on yourself… to try to make yourself approved in your own eyes…
As I have been saying…
Before you can set your mind on the things above… you must first receive the gift of God’s love by receiving Christ…
You must admit… your rebellion against God… and… humbly asking him to forgive you through the death of his Son Jesus…
THEN…God will forgive YOU… make YOU HIS child… and TRANSFORM YOU… by sending HIS SPIRIT to live within your heart …so that… you can experience his love.
Once you receive Christ…and all of his benefits… the Bible describes many practical ways to cultivate this habit.
Obviously… doing what you’re doing today during this moment is crucial…get a lot of gospel-centered teaching.
Listening to and/or singing songs that focus on the gospel is another very helpful way to maintain spiritual growth.
Here are two more ways:
By talking
back to yourself with the gospel…
What I mean by that IS… 2Cor.10:5 tells us…
casting down imaginations… and… every high thing… that… exalteth itself against the knowledge of God… and… bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ…
If you ask HIM… GOD will begin to make you aware of lies you still believe about yourself…
As often as these lies assert themselves… you must “take them captive”…arrest them by answering them with what God says about you.
Also…By building gospel-centered friendships… Sometimes you won’t be able to see the old identity lies… or… you won’t be able to take them captive…
If you don’t regularly open up your mind and heart to
other Christian friends…
you will be greatly hindered… in your ability to set
your heart and mind on the things above. That’s why Paul says in Col.3:16
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… in all wisdom… teaching… and admonishing one another… in psalms… and hymns…and spiritual songs…singing with grace in your hearts… to the Lord.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly”… is a synonym for “set your heart and mind on the things above.” How do you do this?
By “teaching and counseling one another…with all wisdom.”
You let friends who know you well… wisely apply these truths to your life… and… you do the same for them… Both of these interactions deepen your understanding… and… appreciation of your new identity.
I will close with this…
I will summarize “HOW” we achieve this state of transformation.
“Appreciating… rejoicing… and …resting in what Jesus has done for you
is the
way to maintain our daily walk… in staying within the boundaries… of the
transformation that has taken place within us… through Jesus Christ.
Daily… we need to hold fast to Christ …as the center and source of all our joys…
This is why Paul says in Col. 3:5 – “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature...”
Col. 3:12-14 tells us… “Therefore, as God’s chosen people... dearly beloved… clothe yourselves with... love.”
My friends…“...we must talk to ourselves… instead… of allowing ‘ourselves' to talk to us!
Have you ever realized that most of your unhappiness in life… is due to the fact… that… you are listening to yourself… instead of talking to yourself?
Take those thoughts that come to you… the moment you wake up in the morning…
You haven’t originated them… they just start talking to you… they bring back the problems of yesterday…!
They rehearse the problems in your life…continually…
What a way to start the day!
Someone IS talking though… Who is it that’s talking to
you? Your SELF… you are talking to you…
Did you say the enemy?
Well the enemy planted the weed seed in your mind…and offered it to you…and you…accepted it…and agreed with what the enemy had to say…and began rehearsing yesterdays problems today.
You have to turn… on yourself…
upbraid yourself ...
exhort yourself… and ... remind yourself…OF GOD WHO GOD IS...and…
WHAT GOD has done for you… and…
WHAT GOD has pledged himself to do… for you… THEN…REMIND GOD of what you know
about what He’s promised you and said about you… instead of placidly listening
to the entity that is speaking negativity to you... and… allowing that voice to
drag you down and depress you.”
You begin by THANKING GOD for the finished work of Jesus at the cross on your behalf. THEN…
you BLESS GOD
for all He has done. THEN… you speak
1st John 4:17
over yourself...
“Thank
you Lord… that “it is written” in your word in…
1st John 4:17…that… as Jesus is…so am I… in this world.”
Thank him … for the comparison of how Jesus is …and… so
are you…
for example…
Jesus walks in divine health… and… wholeness…SO DO I
Jesus has no lack… BUT… is prosperous in all that he does…SO AM I
And so on… Speak what you know about what God’s word says about you!
Then for those who wake with aches and pains or feeling unwell…
You tell your body how IT feels … Remind IT who it is…the body of Christ! That Christ was never sick while here on this earth …and… because you are IN CHRIST you can’t be sick either…that… the enemy can only OFFER SICKNESS TO YOU…AND YOU ARE NOT RECEIVEING SICKNESS AND DIS-EASE BECAUSE JESUS TOOK ALL SICKNESS AND DIS-EASE AT THE CROSS SO YOU WOULDN’T EVER BE SICK AGAIN.
THAT… BY HIS STRIPES YOU WERE HEALED AT THE CROSS…AND …BECAUSE YOU ARE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS…YOU HAVE THE RESURRECTION POWER OF GOD WORKING IN YOUR LIFE… THEREFORE…YOU COMMAND YOUR BODY TO HEAL ITSELF AND RESTORE IT TO GOD’S DIVINE DESIGN.
THEN…go about your day as usual…AND…YOU…WILL WALK IN VICTORY!

When Jesus went
to the cross… and… conquered... sin… hades and…death…HE triumped over satan…
Jesus
stripped satan of ALL of THE STOLEN God-gifted powers …Given to Adam on

and re-activated The RESURRECTION POWER…WITHIN US

THOSE POWERS are grouped under THE BLESSING…
So…Jesus restored US to THE BLESSING.
The scriptures tell us… In 1 Peter 5:8 that… satan…OUR ADVERSARY… NOW … ROAMS ABOUT…LIKE a roaring lion… looking for whom he may devour.
THAT…WHO…MY FRIENDS…

Anyone who believes that satan HAS power…
HOWEVER…God’s word says… that…satan no longer has ANY POWER…
As a born again believer satan no longer has any power over YOU…
So this feckless…devil…
satan… Roams around roaring LIKE A LION…in language
that you understand…
in order to FRIGHTEN YOU… into believing… THAT… he is powerful…and… to give you the impression… that… He… is even more powerful than GOD ALMIGHTY...
LISTEN CLOSELY NOW These are the only things satan can do… since Jesus stripped him of all power.

Distract you...move your focus off of the things of God… by tempting you… to agree… with what you see with the physical eyes and hear with the physical ears in this natural world.
IF … you
succumb to that temptation… you will
begin to FOCUS…on the cares of this world…

Deceive you...He is the father of all lies…and liars… he’s extremely stealthy… in tempting you with his disceptions.
HOWEVER…
Here’s the real truth that you need to see…in this…
satan will always attack you where
you lack knowledge and understanding of God’s Word.
So… let’s say that you lack knowledge and understanding of what
God says …about… healing and Christian finance …
THEN… satan will attack you in your health… and…in your wallet…WHY? Because you have weakness there.

satan CAN NOT read your mind…
He CAN NOT hear what you are thinking.
He CAN NOT GIVE you anything.
He has no power over you AT ALL!.
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS…
The only thing he… CAN DO… is…
OFFER IT TO YOU…that is known as a temptation…
You make the choice in your response.
Remember…WE ARE ALWAYS IN SOME KIND OF FAITH… Everything we do… starts with a thought…then…we put action to it…and…
When we do that… it will become…
WHAT WE BELIEVE!
So… when the enemy offers you a temptation… here in the natural realm…
IF you take that thought… THEN… put action to it…you will receive the consequences…
SO…Do you accept the evil report and CHOOSE DEATH?…
Do you…Receive the sickness … the dis-ease or lack… by Agreeing with what the enemy is saying about you… here in the natural?… IF SO… you are agreeing with the picture that the enemy has painted for you to see… with your physical eyes… and… hear with your physical ears… and…
IT’S IN THAT AGREEMENT …THAT…you manifest the negative outcome.
OR…
Do you ...CHOOSE LIFE
BY acknowledging the facts… that… you’re seeing in the natural…with your physical eyes…and hearing with your physical ears…
Which…are merely facts…
(anything in this natural world… is factoid…which means… it’s
subject to change.)
THEREFORE…
YOU…
ONLY AGREE with what God’s Word …and
promises… say about you!
THAT MY FRIENDS …IS CHOOSING LIFE!
IT’S ONLY BELIEVING WHAT GOD’S WORD SAYS ABOUT YOU!
Now…I know…
you’re saying... “well I’m sick... and
I’m in pain.”
However…what you are doing is rehearsing the problem… and… speaking sickness…
and… pain into existence… in your body… and… life…
so that…they never go away
…and…
eventually those symptoms… may worsen…and…even… rob you of your life.
Remember…we are given God’s Creative Ability…His Resurrection Power… as a gift…and… that’s the power to speak and have what we say come to pass immediately…just as God did when he created our world and US.
SO…Now…you know… THAT… because of a temptation from the enemy…YOU… are allowing lying symptoms to take over in your life… BY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING…OVER AND OVER AGAIN…WHAT YOU ARE EMBRACING
By agreeing with the lying symptoms…of pain suffering …
I want you to see this…
satan only suggested… that you listen to…and… see… that convoluted picture he painted… complete… with audio…
So…those symptoms… and… painful things…
MAY BE torturing you…
However… they… are STILL… just LYING SYMPTOMS…AND…
THEY were sent to you…by the enemy… as a GIFT…
TO tempt you… into believing his evil report
…and…
WHEN you DO…
the pain… and… sickness manifest… and… continue to do so … as long as you keep thinking…AGREEING WITH IT…AND… SAYING IT…
IF that’s what’s been happening to you… THEN…you’re in agreement with the enemy.
Remember this…
The enemy always works from the outside in.
God always works from the INSIDE OUT.
Where God IS… the enemy… simply CAN NOT BE.
Some will say… we’re in denial…
